THE SUMMIT NIGHT PACK
Part 4 of 10 in Pack for the Mission.
Summit night is a different packing problem from a daytime approach. The climb begins in darkness, often after limited sleep, when temperatures are low, wind exposure is high, and small mistakes in warmth, hydration, or light can become costly.
A summit night pack is built around heat retention, hand function, visibility, calories, and redundancy. Headlamp, spare batteries, down layer, hard shell, insulated gloves, liner gloves, warm hat, buff or balaclava, goggles, glacier glasses, insulated water, high-calorie food, hand warmers, personal medications, communication, emergency blanket, and a small first-aid kit all have specific roles.
The goal is not to overpack. The goal is to carry the items that keep the climber functional during the coldest hours of the climb.
For Kordillera, summit preparation begins before leaving the refuge. Warmth, light, water, and calories are part of the route plan.
Pack for the coldest hours of the climb.
