In the High Andes, the eye is always drawn upward. We chase the peaks, the ridgelines, and the dramatic vistas. But beneath those heavy boots lies the most critical component of the páramo ecosystem—a feature so subtle it is often ignored, yet so powerful it sustains everything above it.

Welcome to Part 7 of our Living Páramo series. Today, we turn our gaze downward to the engine room of the high country: the living soil.

The Invisible Engine

Páramo soils are one of the least visible parts of the High Andes, but they are the foundation upon which the entire ecosystem depends. In many páramo landscapes, nature conducts a slow-motion experiment. Cold temperatures, high moisture, dense roots, mosses, grasses, and volcanic material combine in a unique alchemy to form soils that are incredibly rich in organic matter.

Unlike in warmer climates, where organic material breaks down rapidly, the cool, damp conditions of the páramo slow decomposition to a crawl. This allows a thick, organic carpet to accumulate over time, creating a soil structure that is as much biological as it is geological.

The Dual-Function System

Because these soils are so rich in organic matter and structure, they serve two primary, vital functions for the region:

  • A Carbon Vault: The slow rate of decomposition allows the soil to store massive amounts of organic carbon. In a world focused on climate resilience, these high-altitude soils act as one of the planet’s significant carbon sinks.
  • The Hydrological Sponge: These soils are the reason the páramo functions as a water system. Water does not rush over the surface; it is filtered, held, and released gradually. Roots, mosses, and deep soil structure feed the wetlands, streams, and plant communities that exist far below the high peaks.

A Trekker’s Perspective

For those of us moving through this landscape, the lesson is a shift in perception. The páramo is not simply grassland underfoot. It is a living surface where water, roots, soil, and carbon are in a constant, complex interaction.

When you trek in the High Andes, you are walking across a massive, living filtration and storage system. Much of what makes the High Andes habitable begins far below the visible landscape. The ground isn’t just a place to stand—it is the very structure that keeps the region alive.
