Some mountain emergencies begin years before the climb.

Altitude, cold, dehydration, fatigue, and hypoxia do not create coronary disease — they expose weak reserves that were invisible at sea level. Chest pain above 12,000 ft is never something to “push through.” In the Andes, the descent decision is often made too late.

The mountain is not emotional. It simply removes the margin.
