THE TOENAIL PROBLEM

Part 6 of 10 in Feet Finish Expeditions.

Toenail problems in trekking and mountaineering are usually mechanical. Long nails, short boots, swelling, thick socks, poor lacing, or repeated downhill impact can drive the toes into the front of the boot.

The result can be pain, bruising, nail-bed trauma, black toenails, or eventual nail loss. Once this begins, every descent becomes harder, and the problem can change how a trekker walks.

Prevention starts before the trail. Trim nails correctly, confirm that boots have enough front-of-boot space, manage sock thickness, and use heel-lock lacing to reduce forward slide on descents.

Small preparation protects long days.

Protect the descent before it starts.
