For many travelers and mountaineers, the páramo is simply the landscape you pass through on the ascent to a summit or glacier. It is often dismissed as empty mountain ground—a stretch of cold, wind-exposed terrain that must be traversed to reach the “real” objective.

Beyond the Surface: A Living System
The páramo sits in the critical transition zone above the upper cloud forest and below the permanent ice. Far from being barren, it is a powerhouse of biological and hydrological activity.
This ecosystem is composed of a specialized mosaic—grasses, mosses, volcanic soils, high-altitude shrubs, and unique plants like the iconic frailejones. Together, they function as the natural water infrastructure of the Andes. These plants and soils capture rain, fog, and snowmelt, holding that water and releasing it gradually into the streams and rivers that sustain the valleys below.
When you understand the páramo as a functioning hydrological system, the mountain landscape shifts from a backdrop into a living, breathing entity.
